Keyword Strategy

Run a keyword research session

How research sessions work and how to turn one into a publishing plan.

Updated July 9, 2026

A keyword research session is how you find the search phrases worth creating pins for, and skip the ones that will not move traffic. Each session takes a topic you give it and returns a working shortlist.

What a session does:

  1. You enter a seed topic or phrase.
  2. PIN Hacking pulls related Pinterest search phrases and clusters them by theme.
  3. When your Pinterest account is connected, the session also shows keywords you are already winning with now, based on your top pins by outbound clicks over the last 90 days.
  4. You get timing signals on each cluster, so you know what to create now versus what is climbing for later.

To run a session:

  1. Open Keyword Strategy.
  2. Enter your seed topic. Broad enough to have room, specific enough to match your niche. Example: "meal prep for beginners."
  3. Start the session.
  4. Review the clusters, the "winning now" list, and the timing buckets.
  5. Save or export the keywords you want to build pins for.

Turning a session into a plan:

  • Pick a handful of phrases from the clusters that fit content you already have or can make.
  • Send each winner to the Pin Title & Description Generator to create copy.
  • Space your pins out over the coming weeks rather than dumping them all at once.

Good to know: Some volume and trend data is powered by Pinterest's own data and may show as not available until deeper access is granted. The keyword clusters and your "winning now" list work regardless.
