Short answer: these are not competitors, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
Tailwind is a scheduler. It takes pins you have already decided on and gets them published on a sensible cadence, at volume, without you sitting at your desk. It has been doing that since 2012 and it is an official Pinterest partner.

Where Tailwind is simply better
We would be wasting your time if we pretended otherwise.
Volume publishing. If you need 200 pins out the door this month, no amount of good keyword strategy replaces a queue. Tailwind's scheduling is mature, it has been refined for over a decade, and it works.
Design. Tailwind will make the image. We will not. We will tell you what to write on it.
Multi-platform. If Pinterest is one of four channels you are feeding, a Pinterest-only tool is the wrong shape, and Tailwind's cross-posting saves you real hours.
The free tier. Tailwind has one. We do not. We have a 5-day trial with a card on file. If $0 forever with five posts a month is what fits right now, that is a legitimate reason to start there.
Official partner status. Tailwind is in Pinterest's own partner directory and has been part of that ecosystem since 2012. So are we, as an approved API partner, but they got there first and by a long way.
Where the two stop overlapping
Here is the thing a scheduler cannot do for you, by design.
A queue is indifferent to what is in it. It will publish a pin titled "Cozy Fall Vibes" on the same reliable cadence as a pin titled "Fall Porch Decor Ideas for Small Front Steps", and only one of those matches something a person actually types into Pinterest search. The scheduler is not at fault. It was never the scheduler's job.
That is the gap. Pinterest is a search engine, and search engines rank words. If the words are guesses, consistent publishing just distributes the guesses more evenly.
Running both, which is what we would actually recommend
This is what most of our users do, and we would rather tell you plainly than pretend you have to pick.

I already pin consistently and it is not working. Which do I need?+
That is the case for keyword work rather than more cadence. If months of consistent pinning has not moved traffic, publishing more often on the same guesses usually will not either. Start with the free keyword tool and see whether the phrases you have been targeting have real search demand.
